All you need to know to get started on Memrise
How many languages can I learn on Memrise?
Currently, you can learn 149 languages on Memrise. Browse all of the languages available from the 'languages' drop down at the top of the Home Page or when you create an account.
How do I change the app's interface language?
The app will automatically detect your device's language settings and use that language as a default for the app's interface. In order to use Memrise in another language, you will have to change your device's language settings.
Will Memrise delete Community Courses?
Earlier this year, we announced the transition of Community Courses from the main Memrise platform. As of March 31st, 2024, these courses live on a dedicated site - community-courses.memrise.com - and are no longer accessible via memrise.com or our mobile apps.
We understand that this change has impacted each of you differently, depending on the courses you were taking and the learning journeys you embarked upon. We appreciate your patience and support during this period of transition.
Initially, we communicated that Community Courses would remain available on the separate site until at least the end of 2024. We are now extending this timeframe to the end of 2025 to give you more time to access these resources.
Rest assured, we will provide updates regarding any major changes. Thank you for being part of the Memrise community!
Can I add or follow my friends on Memrise?
Unfortunately, we don't offer currently social features such as following friends or leaderboards in our app or website.
How does the spaced repetition system work?
The Memrise algorithm predicts when any given word or sentence is likely to fall out of your long-term memory and it's time for you to review it. This is based on a learning technique called the spaced repetition system, which leads to stronger memories.
When reviewing a word or sentence correctly, the item will be moved to a longer interval. The review schedule is as follows:
Next review in: 4 hours > 12 hours > 24 hours > 6 days > 12 days > 48 days > 96 days > 6 months
If you get an item wrong during a review, it will be moved back to the first interval (i.e. to be reviewed in 4 hours).
What are Lessons?

Lessons are structured sequences of learning activities. They include a mix of content types, such as Learn, Review, Sentence Builder Buddy, Pronunciation Buddy, Videos, and Conversations. The goal is to keep your practice varied so you can use the language confidently in real-world situations!
You can start recommended lessons any time from the Lessons tab or by following the next recommended activity shown at the end of your current session.
How are Lessons organised?
Lessons are put together by our logic system, which decides the best order for your activities. It plans up to 15 steps ahead, but the exact content, like the words, videos, and conversations you’ll see, is loaded live as you go.
Can I skip activities?
If the first activity has no content (such as Review with 0 words), you will be prompted to skip or do another activity.
What are Wordlists?

Wordlists are curated collections of vocabulary grouped by themes like 'Greetings & Foundations' or 'Travelling & Living Abroad'. They act as focused language playlists, each one designed to help you acquire vocabulary tailored to a specific situation or goal.

Can I learn multiple Wordlists at once?
No. You can only have one Active Wordlist per language at a time. However, you can switch between Wordlists freely, and your progress in each one is preserved.

Can I practice pronunciation here?
Yes! If the word supports pronunciation, you can tap a button right from the Word Information screen to practice it using our Pronunciation Buddy.
Is this available for all languages?
Yes! However, be aware that video clips, script/romanization and Pronunciation Buddy availability may vary by language and item.
Do I need a subscription to use it?
No 🙂 You can currently access Word Information for free.
What is My Activities?
'My Activities' is a feature that tracks your language learning progress by monitoring metrics such as words learned, words reviewed, videos watched, and conversations completed. It aims to help you build consistent learning habits without the pressure of maintaining streaks or earning points.
Where do I find it?
You’ll find My Activities on the Memrise app and website on your Home tab.

How is it different from streaks or points?
Traditional streaks and point systems can sometimes feel like pressure or guilt-trips. My Activities aims to help you stay motivated by showing real, meaningful progress—whether that’s watching one video or learning 10 new words.
Will it remind me to study?
No, My Activities doesn’t send reminders or notifications. It’s a quiet, guilt-free space where you can reflect on your progress whenever you like.
Can I use it to set goals?
While there’s no formal goal-setting tool (yet!), My Activities can help you understand your learning patterns. If you notice you’re watching lots of videos but not reviewing much vocabulary, it’s a helpful nudge to balance things out.
Do I need a subscription to use it?
Nope! My Activities is available to all users on the app and website, whether you're using the free version or have a Pro subscription.
Can I save my conversations with MemBot?
Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to save your conversations with MemBot. We are aware of this request. Please keep an eye out for updates!
Customise your learning and update your profile details
How can I change my email, username or profile details on my iOS device?
To edit your profile, follow these instructions:

How can I change my email address, username or edit my profile details on web?
To edit your Profile on web, simply log in to your Memrise account and visit memrise.com/settings.

How can I delete my account?
You can delete your Memrise account by signing in on web with your username and password and going to your profile settings. You can also head straight here to delete your profile.
If you are using the app, go to profile > settings > Delete Account.
To assure the highest level of data protection, deleting your account will delete all personal identifiable information linked with the account.
⚠️ Please note that deleting your account will not cancel any active subscriptions. Before deleting your account, please ensure you have cancelled your membership's autorenewal.
How do I stop receiving marketing emails or push notifications?
If you wish to stop receiving our marketing emails, simply click the ‘Unsubscribe here’ link at the bottom of any of our emails.
To stop receiving push notifications, please go to your notifications section in your device settings and disable Memrise.
Please note: even if you unsubscribe from marketing emails, we may still need to send you the occasional email related to important changes in the product or your profile, as well as transactional emails (such as password reset requests), as per our Privacy Policy.
How do I enable or disable Dark Mode on my iOS device?
Want to learn at night or save your phone's battery? On the iOS app, you can enable Dark Mode!
To enable or disable this, follow these instructions:

What is the Romanisation toggle?
The Romanisation toggle is a feature in Memrise that allows you to switch between learning a language using its native characters (scripts) or its romanised form (using the Latin alphabet). For example, if you are studying Korean, the toggle lets you choose whether to see the words in their original Korean characters or in a more familiar romanised version.
To use the romanisation toggle, you can follow these steps:
-Go to the Learning Settings in your Memrise account.
-Look for the romanisation toggle option.
-Switch the toggle on or off according to your preference.
This feature can help make learning a new script easier by providing a familiar alphabet alongside the language's native writing system.
What are my Learning Settings and how can I change them on web?
Your Learning Settings can affect the way your Learn and Review sessions are constructed. When using Memrise on web, simply visit memrise.com/settings/learning to customise your learning style.

How can I enable microphone permission?
If you want to use Communicate/MemBot, Memrise will ask for permission to access your microphone. Simply tap 'OK' the first time you launch this feature.
If you selected 'Don't Allow' and you wish to enable microphone permission for Memrise, you can do so by following the instructions below:
Please note: If Memrise doesn't appear in your Privacy settings on your iOS device, it means you haven't launched Pronunciation mode yet. Memrise will not appear in your device's Microphone list unless you have launched the Pronunciation feature at least once.
How to manage your subscription and solve payment issues
How do I subscribe to Memrise PRO?

We offer payment via debit/credit card (Visa, Mastercard and American Express) and PayPal on the website or via in-app purchases on mobile (Apple App Store and Google Play Store).
How to subscribe on the iOS app
You can upgrade at any time by tapping the Upgrade button, which appears at the top of the page on the Home and Learn tab. From there, select your plan (Monthly, Annual or Lifetime).
How to subscribe on the website
You can purchase a Memrise subscription by visiting our website at https://app.memrise.com/. After signing in with on your account, click the Subscribe button at the top of the page or visit memrise.com/premium to view the available plans.
Select your chosen plan (Monthly, Annual, or Lifetime) and enter your payment information. We offer payment with credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), as well as PayPal.
What kind of subscription plans are available?
We offer three subscription plans at Memrise: Monthly, Annual and Lifetime.
All Premium memberships will give you access to all languages and scenarios (you aren't restricted to one language!) on the iOS app and at memrise.com.
We offer payment via debit/credit card (Visa, Mastercard and American Express) and PayPal on the website, or via in-app purchase on the mobile app (Apple App Store).
You can see all the available subscriptions, prices and payment methods for your country by tapping the Upgrade button on the iOS app or by visiting memrise.com/premium while logged in on the website.
Subscribing on the website will also give you access to your membership on the mobile app (and vice versa). Simply sign in with the same username or email address!
Does my membership apply to all languages?
Your Memrise membership applies to your username rather than specific languages. This means that you'll be able to access all content across all languages available on the app and website.
Can I gift Memrise Pro to friends and family?
Unfortunately, it's not currently possible to purchase Memrise vouchers or a gift of a Memrise subscription for another person. However, we may offer opportunities to do that throughout the year, so please keep an eye out on our social media pages and our newsletters/marketing emails for the next chance to give the gift of Memrise Pro. 👀
As an alternative, if you ask permission to log in to your friend or family member's account, you can purchase a subscription for them with your payment details.
How does the Lifetime plan work?
How does the Lifetime plan work and what does it unlock?
If you select the Lifetime plan, the amount will be charged as a one-off upfront payment without any renewals.
As a user of Memrise Early Access, will have access to all Scenarios across all languages currently on the app and ones we release in the future. You will also have access to all premium features available on the Memrise Community Course platform.
You can purchase the Lifetime plan by visiting https://app.memrise.com/premium/ on a computer or by tapping the Upgrade button in the app.
Regardless of which platform you purchase Lifetime on, you'll have access to the paid features on all the devices you log in on, just remember to log in with the same email address/username.
I'm already a Pro user, how can I upgrade to Lifetime?
If you're already subscribed to Memrise Pro (Annual, Monthly or Quarterly), and wish to upgrade to Lifetime, you will first have to cancel your current subscription, let it expire and then resubscribe at the end of the current period. Further instructions on how to do so can be found at this link.

Can I upgrade from an Annual to a Lifetime subscription?
If you want to switch from an Annual or Monthly subscription to a Lifetime plan, please contact us.
We can end your current subscription so you can buy the Lifetime plan right away. However, we won't be able to give you a partial refund for the unused time.
Alternatively, you can create a new account on Memrise and purchase Lifetime at app.memrise.com/premium.
I’m having trouble completing the purchase
If you are facing problems completing the purchase for a Memrise subscription, please first of all double check if your chosen payment method can be used to purchase a subscription to Memrise: we offer payment via Debit / Credit Card (Visa, Mastercard and American Express) and PayPal on web or via in-app purchase on mobile (Apple App Store).

My Memrise subscription with Google Play didn't activate
Are you having trouble accessing your subscription to Memrise after a purchase? Is it not working or didn't activate? So that our Support team can resolve this for you, please follow the instructions below:

Why can't I share my Memrise subscription with my Family? (Family Sharing/Family Library)
Unfortunately, Memrise Pro is not currently set up to support Apple's family sharing or Google Play Family Library at this time.
However, please note that you can use your Memrise account on multiple devices. Simply sign in with your username and password.
